Be’er-Sova’s aim is to supply free food to the needy in Beersheva. With extremely high rates of unemployment and nearly a quarter of the local population on welfare, the severe cuts in government assistance have driven many to desperation.
Set up in 1999 by a group of volunteers, Be’er-Sova supplies hot meals at its “Restaurant for the Needy”, to school children and to elderly shut-ins. We also supply sandwiches to school children and food packages to needy families. The bulk of the work at the kitchen is carried out by volunteers.
Recognizing that food related programs alone are not an adequate solution to the alleviation of poverty, Be'er-Sova has expanded its operations to providing educational and empowerment tools. This past year, we have conducted quality after school programs and summer camps for children at risk as well as an empowerment cooking course for unemployed Ethiopian women. Almost all of our recipients have been referred to us by the local welfare authorities, and virtually all receive some sort of public assistance.
Be’er-Sova is a non-denominational organization that receives no support from the government. We are an organization of individuals who represent the entire political, religious and social spectrum, but who are united in our commitment to ease the difficulties of those in need.
Be'er-Sova carries out its mission through implementation of the following projects:
o Restaurant for the Needy
o Sandwich and hot meals distribution programs for schoolchildren
o Meals and sandwiches to Bedouin schoolchildren
o Food Packages to families
o Summer camps for children at risk
o Moadoniot (after-school enrichment centers) for youth at risk
o Empowerment cooking course for Ethiopian women (last year)
o Meals-on-Wheels
